Sunscreen & Spray Tans

As we near the end of May, summer is just around the corner. And while everyone loves a good tan, it’s important to remember to wear sunscreen!

Adding an extra layer of coverage is always a good idea, regardless of if the sun is out and shining. People often forget this, so try to make it apart of your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth and washing your face. When the UV index is above 4, be sure to keep track of your skin and how many hours you’re spending outside. And for extra protection, think about using makeup products with added SPF. These are some easy and quick ways to stay on top of your skin this summer. A little extra time spent now can save you some wrinkles and sun spots later on.

Let do a little SPF and UV explanation

UV Radiation aka as Ultraviolet radiation is defined as the invisible sun rays that can burn skin and cause skin cancer. There are 3 types of UV radiation rays: UVA (ultraviolet A), UVB (ultraviolet B), and UVC (ultraviolet C)

UVA & UVB are the only rays that penetrate the ozone layer and reach the surface of our planet, being responsible for skin cancers, including melanoma,

UVC is the most dangerous type of UV, but poses no threat to humans, animals or plant life ,as it cannot penetrate the earth’s ozone layer.

SPF or Sun Protection Factor is a measure of how well a sunscreen will protect the effect of UVB rays on our skin. For best protection experts recommend applying a minimum SPF sunscreen or 15, every 2 hours. The SPF Scale is not linear.

  • SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays
  • SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays
  • SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays

SPF 30 only give you 4% more protection than SPF 15, and SPF 50 only 1% more than SPF 30

SPF’s higher that that, like SPFs75 or SPFs 100, don’t offer much greater protection than SPF30 and mislead people into thinking they get more protection than in reality.

On top of the natural light from the sun, artificial light as light from tanning beds, tanning lamps, also contain harmful UVA & UVB.

Although UV light has some damaging effects on our health, UV rays also trigger the production of Vitamin D, which helps grow healthy bones and teeth.

Another idea to prepare for the hot summer months ahead is to start out with a spray tan as a nice base layer. Having a base often makes for a more enjoyable outlook and less burning right off the bat. Step out onto the beach for the first time without feeling pasty and prepare for a golden sun kissed look that will not leave you looking streaky. Even with this airbrushed tan, remember to apply your sunscreen.
